Siesta Key in Sarasota reaps benefits of No. 1 beach ranking
Wednesday, June 29th, 2011 at 10:49am. 213 Views, 0 Comments.
In the weeks since Siesta Beach was ranked as America's top sand for 2011, visitor interest in Sarasota and area lodging bookings at many properties have skyrocketed, hoteliers and tourism officials say. Traffic was so high in late May on the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau's website that it almost crashed and the organization had to get more digital capacity.
Although exact visitors' figures are not known, Stephen "Dr. Beach" Leatherman's May 27 ranking of Siesta as the nation's top shoreline appears to be playing a role in increased - or planned - traffic throughout the Key.
For lodging operators and tourist spots alike, the heightened attention Siesta Beach is receiving comes as welcome relief after years of struggling against a wobbling…

Venice, on Florida's Gulf coast is a town that has a calming design, great beaches and a sense of community. It is only 30 minutes south of artsy Sarasota. It has expansive white-sand beaches and a palm-lined downtown district brimming with inviting boutiques, antique shops and stellar restaurants.
With no barrier islands on this stretch of the coast, Venice directly fronts the aqua Gulf. Its downtown and a major residential area are known as Venice Island, separated from the mainland by a slender segment of the Intracoastal Waterway. Live oak and pine trees mix with other foliage to create a lush setting along streets where Italian Renaissance architecture dominates.

A new state law allows no-limit poker betting at 23 casinos and pari-mutuels parlors in Florida, including One-Eyed Jacks Poker Room at the Sarasota Kennel Club. According to the website CardPlayer.com, the new law "is expected to propel Florida into one of the premiere poker destinations in the country." "Florida becomes another Atlantic City, Tunica or Vegas," Russ Christianson, the vice president of gaming operations at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, told the website.
That is quite a progression since 1997, when Florida first legalized poker, but limited pots to $10 -- total. The new law is part of a compact reached with the Seminole Indians and is expected to pay the state $150 million annually over the next decade.
The new law affects…

SIESTA KEY BEACH KNOWN AS HAVING ABILITY TO HEAL!
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 1:23pm. 352 Views, 0 Comments.
Among Sarasota's holistic community, Siesta Beach has an even more impressive reputation: It's known as a place where a concentration of energy maximizes the ability to heal physically and emotionally. Some credit the qualities of the beach's sand. Others talk of the presence offshore of quartz crystals that may be derived from the ancient mythical city of Atlantis. Some healers point to a decades-old, well-canopied tree, surrounded by heavy grass growth and growing about 60 feet from the coast, as an indication of the beach's metaphysical vitality. Others talk of a mysterious protection from hurricanes that they credit to either Indian blessings or a vortex of energy they say exists near the rumored Atlantis crystal location.
Whatever the reasons,…
“UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER” STATUE STAYS IN SARASOTA BAYFRONT!
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 1:22pm. 272 Views, 0 Comments.
The 26-foot-tall "Unconditional Surrender" statue stays on the city's bayfront property for at least the next 10 years, and will be owned by the public after that. City commissioners voted Monday night 3-2 to accept the $500,000 statue as a gift from World War II veteran Jack Curran, 89.
Curran offered the statue to the city provided that the Commission would agree to leave it in the same spot next to U.S. 41 where it has been a constant draw since October 2008 for people taking snapshots. Not everyone sees it as a big reminder of U.S. victory in World War II. Others say it is a big ugly ripoff of a famous 1945 magazine photo. The owners of that image, Time Inc., have indicated that they consider the statue a copyright infringement. If Time Inc. sues…

SARASOTA FLORIDA TOURISM HAS A MODEST TURNAROUND
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 8:14am. 309 Views, 0 Comments.
According to an article in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, signs of a modest turnaround in the tourism industry are emerging for the first time since the stock market began its deep slide 14 months ago. In Sarasota County, hotels and condos reported revenues from rentals rose 2 percent in September, led by big gains on Siesta Key and in Venice, the first overall increase since August 2008.
"We are definitely beginning to see a recovery," said Walter Klages, a Tampa tourism consultant who does research for both Manatee and Sarasota County convention and visitors' bureaus. "The trend for the first time since 2007 is up."
Hedging the optimism is that September is traditionally one of the slowest tourist months. And in Sarasota, businesses are still slashing…
