Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 at 1:35pm. 49 Views, 0 Comments.
Legacy Trail, the best cycling trail in Sarasota County just got better. Now Sarasota cyclists can enjoy an 11-mile ride south that offers views of Roberts Bay and Dona Bay. Each bridge features little side areas where you can step off your bike and stretch your legs. In the evening, as the sun sets over the water, it's quite a sight.
On the Legacy Trail, you'll encountered cyclists of all ages. Some young men pedaled hard while crouched over $2,000 bikes with aerodynamic handlebars. Some older women cruised along while perched on upright bikes.
The Legacy Trail starts near McIntosh Road in Sarasota. It passes Osprey and Oscar Scherer State Park before crossing the bays just north of Venice.
The next bridge for the Legacy Trail will be the one…
NO LIMIT POKER NOW AVAILABLE IN SARASOTA!
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at 2:39pm. 47 Views, 0 Comments.
A new state law allows no-limit poker betting at 23 casinos and pari-mutuels parlors in Florida, including One-Eyed Jacks Poker Room at the Sarasota Kennel Club. According to the website CardPlayer.com, the new law "is expected to propel Florida into one of the premiere poker destinations in the country." "Florida becomes another Atlantic City, Tunica or Vegas," Russ Christianson, the vice president of gaming operations at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, told the website.
That is quite a progression since 1997, when Florida first legalized poker, but limited pots to $10 -- total. The new law is part of a compact reached with the Seminole Indians and is expected to pay the state $150 million annually over the next decade.
The new law affects…

SIESTA KEY BEACH KNOWN AS HAVING ABILITY TO HEAL!
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 1:23pm. 118 Views, 0 Comments.
Among Sarasota's holistic community, Siesta Beach has an even more impressive reputation: It's known as a place where a concentration of energy maximizes the ability to heal physically and emotionally. Some credit the qualities of the beach's sand. Others talk of the presence offshore of quartz crystals that may be derived from the ancient mythical city of Atlantis. Some healers point to a decades-old, well-canopied tree, surrounded by heavy grass growth and growing about 60 feet from the coast, as an indication of the beach's metaphysical vitality. Others talk of a mysterious protection from hurricanes that they credit to either Indian blessings or a vortex of energy they say exists near the rumored Atlantis crystal location.
Whatever the reasons,…
“UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER” STATUE STAYS IN SARASOTA BAYFRONT!
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 1:22pm. 95 Views, 0 Comments.
The 26-foot-tall "Unconditional Surrender" statue stays on the city's bayfront property for at least the next 10 years, and will be owned by the public after that. City commissioners voted Monday night 3-2 to accept the $500,000 statue as a gift from World War II veteran Jack Curran, 89.
Curran offered the statue to the city provided that the Commission would agree to leave it in the same spot next to U.S. 41 where it has been a constant draw since October 2008 for people taking snapshots. Not everyone sees it as a big reminder of U.S. victory in World War II. Others say it is a big ugly ripoff of a famous 1945 magazine photo. The owners of that image, Time Inc., have indicated that they consider the statue a copyright infringement. If Time Inc. sues…
SIESTA KEY BEACH STILL TO BE IN THE TOP 10!
Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 at 1:56pm. 114 Views, 0 Comments.
Local officials and business leaders from around Sarasota County gathered Monday morning on Lido Beach to show prospective tourists first-hand that area beaches and waters are free of the massive oil slick fouling the Gulf of Mexico. Sporting dark sunglasses, some sandals and mostly short sleeves, the assemblage at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota's posh Lido Key beach club was both happy testimonial and unapologetic promotional stunt.
In all, some two dozen elected officials and others filmed spots that will be cobbled into a YouTube video aimed at bolstering the area's image.
"Our beaches are as beautiful as they've ever been," said Richard Bradshaw, owner of the Comfort Inn and Days Inn hotels, on Clark Road, and chairman of Sarasota County's Tourist…

SARASOTA FLORIDA TOURISM HAS A MODEST TURNAROUND
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 8:14am. 138 Views, 0 Comments.
According to an article in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, signs of a modest turnaround in the tourism industry are emerging for the first time since the stock market began its deep slide 14 months ago. In Sarasota County, hotels and condos reported revenues from rentals rose 2 percent in September, led by big gains on Siesta Key and in Venice, the first overall increase since August 2008.
"We are definitely beginning to see a recovery," said Walter Klages, a Tampa tourism consultant who does research for both Manatee and Sarasota County convention and visitors' bureaus. "The trend for the first time since 2007 is up."
Hedging the optimism is that September is traditionally one of the slowest tourist months. And in Sarasota, businesses are still slashing…
HOME BUYER CREDIT EXTENDED FOR SARASOTA HOME BUYERS
Friday, November 6th, 2009 at 11:13am. 129 Views, 0 Comments.
After the Senate gave final approval last night without a dissenting vote, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly this afternoon to pass legislation containing an extension and expansion of the homebuyer tax credit, completing Congressional action and sending the tax credit to President Obama for his signature, possibly as early as tomorrow.
The $8,000 homebuyer tax credit for first-time buyers, due to expire in 25 days, will be extended through April 30 of next year and buyers will have an additional two months, until the end of June, to close. First-time buyers who are in the process of making a purchase will no longer need to worry about qualifying for the $8,000 credit if they close after the November 30 deadline. The new legislation…
SOUTH LIDO PARK IN SARASOTA BECOMES TED SPERLING PARK!
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 at 2:23pm. 330 Views, 0 Comments.
According to an article in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, the long fight between developers and nature lovers over how best to use Sarasota County's beauty was perhaps best exemplified in the late 1960s clash over South Lido Key.
Big-time Florida developer Arvida Corp. had plans to turn the tip of the key into a golf course, marina and condos. But a citizens group, led by local broker Ted Sperling, fought the plans and eventually got Arvida to agree to sell the 100-acre site to the public.
"To have the courage and the tenacity and the passion to go up against a force like that, and to bring a force like that to its knees ... to me, as a 20-year-old, it was inspiring," Sarasota County Commissioner Jon Thaxton said of Sperling.
In recognition of Sperling's…
