$21 MILLION IN STIMULUS-FUNDED CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN IN SARASOTA COUNTY!

According to an article in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, work on road construction projects totaling about $21 million will begin in early April, 2010, with most of the cost paid by federal economic stimulus money.

Among the biggest projects is a $7 million resurfacing of University Parkway from U.S. 41 to Interstate 75.  Work on the Sarasota County portion, from U.S. 41 to U.S. 301, is expected to begin in early April, said Jim Harriott, the county's public works director.  Manatee County is seeking bids and expects work to begin in July on the segment between U.S. 301 and I-75.

Most of the project funding comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, designed to stimulate the economy and boost employment. Local governments added local and state money to make up shortfalls in federal funding.  All of the project bids need to be approved by the state Department of Transportation, which makes start dates unpredictable.

In the Venice area, the $1.2 million repaving of a one-mile stretch of East Venice Avenue between Ramsey and Jacaranda Boulevard will begin in early April.

In mid-April, U.S. 301 from Myrtle Avenue to DeSoto Road will be expanded from four to six lanes for $9.3 million. The improvements follow an $18.3 million expansion of U.S. 301 that began in October.

Downtown Venice will get a face-lift to one of its most prominent intersections and is among the next stimulus projects to break ground.

City workers will begin installing new water pipes near the West Venice Avenue and Harbor Road intersection March 15. Contractors will begin a $330,000 repaving project that will add new crosswalks and audible street signals.
